Senior Member TomA Posted May 10, 2007 Senior Member Share Posted May 10, 2007 I've been reading that Propecia can prevent shock loss after a transplant. Anyone know more about this? I got a prescription from my Doc for 100 tabs today, just in case I end up doing this. (Looks like Dr. Path can get me in on July 20.) (I also got a prescription for Ambien!) I'm not sure I need to be taking it for any OTHER REASON--see my current hair pattern below--LOL! -- 1st HT with Dr. Damkerng Pathomvanich, Bangkok, Thailand - 18 JUL 07 - 3300 grafts (FUT) - US$6,930 2st HT with Dr. Pathuri Madhu, Hyderabad, India - 31 JUL 10 - 2249 grafts (FUT) - US$2,200 3rd HT with Dr. Pathuri Madhu, Hyderabad, India - 26 JUL 11 - 320 grafts (FUE) touch up - US$0 My Hair Loss Weblog My opinions are my own. Guest HLBD
Shock loss is believed to be caused by a disruption in blood flow to the area being transplanted or the donor area. It is very unlikely that Propecia - a anti-DHT drug - would have any effect on shock loss. Minox, however, could be effective in helping to avoid any serious shock loss, or shorten the time in which the hair will grow back, but you can only start back on it after the scabs have fallen off and the scar has begun to heal. Bill - Seemiller
Tom A, Propecia /Proscar (cheaper form) can certainly strengthen the integ of the hair helping it become more resistant. Hair that goes into shock and doesn't return is hair that was inevitably on its way out anyway and wasn't strong enough to return. Spex's quote above sums it up. Shockloss is unpredictable, however, Propecia since it can strengthen hairs that would have otherwise been on their way out, can make it more "shock" resistant. It is not a definite...but it can help. At the very least, it helps minimize permanent shock loss. Bill
