Tom Diepstraten
Hello there, I'm considering a hair transplant and would love any advice the community can give (especially on areas I want to address can be treated and whether my donor hair looks acceptable) My hair loss started fresh out of high school, but I ignored it for 5 years. It's difficult to say where exactly on the norwood scale I'd rate it, since the hair was never completely gone in places, just incredibly thin in a straight band across the top and a perpendicular line down the front with a stubborn patch at the very front holding on. Once I saw my doctor about the issue and we did some blood tests he put me on a prescription of finasteride, which I have taken for 5 years. The finasteride reversed the hair loss somewhat, in that a layer of fuzz appeared where hair was gone, but it did not grow more than that. After two years on the finasteride I also started applying minoxidil which reversed the hair loss more, reducing the width of the thinning band across the back of my head. I've applied the minoxidil for three years now. Below are pictures of what I have today The band running down my head from back to front makes doing any kind of hair styling quite difficult, so if possible I'd like to get quite a large area addressed. I've read mixed answers on whether hair transplants can be applied over areas that still have hair growing on them, so if anybody has insight on that it would be great. I'm based in Alberta, and with the world situation as it is right now I'd prefer to have any treatments done in Canada, so I've begun looking at Dr. Nakatsui in Edmonton and Drs. Hasson and Wong in Vancouver
DrMunibAhmad
Dag Tom, The hairs growing on the thinned area are to thinned out to expect anything from them. I would consider this as a bold area when doing a hairtransplant. My advice would be to get it done over 2 procedures, with the first one focussing on the front with a conservative hairline. With this you can cover a large area because your temporal humps are not far receded. So also good to keep taking finasteride if you don't have any sides. Second procedure can be done 10 months after the first, to cover the crown. Your donor looks quite okay, but i am missing photos to determine if there is any retrograde alopecia, although this pattern tends to not have that. What's your age? Veel geluk. Senior Member Britanium Posted February 20, 2022 Senior Member Share Posted February 20, 2022 Hasson & Wong is a excellent choice.. Are you thinking FUT or FUE ?
Senior Member NARMAK Posted February 20, 2022 Senior Member Share Posted February 20, 2022 The good thing is that you have tried Finasteride, Minoxodil and adhered to them. In terms of Canada, if your budget allows. Hasson and Wong are probably the best place to approach and see how they'd recommend you approach your hair transplant. I do think they may recommend FUT and then a combination of FUE to maximise the donor area. Apparently H&W are FUT specialists but the doctors only recently felt FUE had reached the level where they could offer patients a great result. So i do think they're probably gonna be the best place in Canada for you. Follow my first Hair Transplant Journey! Tom Diepstraten
Hello all (en goedenavond), thank you so much for your information and answers. To answer Dr. Ahmad's question, I'm 28 years old I was hoping to stick with FUE, as I'd like to wear my hair short on the sides and the back and longer on top (the opposite of what I have now), and I'm somewhat worried about the horizontal scar FUT would leave. But I imagine with the amount of area I'd like to get covered that might not be realistic and I'll have to see what the doctors recommend
DrMunibAhmad
Dag Tim, A full coverage of the bold/thinned parts of scalp should be possible in 2 fue surgerys if you would go conservative. Donor looks average.
