Using hair from non-safe donor area

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm someone with norwood 6 in my early twenties. I'd like to really get as much density back but I understand my aggresive hair loss is trending towards Norwood 7.

I'm willing to use finasteride/dutasteride for the rest of my life (not minoxidil tho). Would it be a bad idea to use hair from the non-safe donor area for a transplant if I'm already willing to use DHT blockers to prevent further hair loss?

What do you mean by non safe? If you use hair that is prone to thinning. It will eventually thin and expose scarring. Now, if the hair is healthy, there’s a chance its not prone to thinning. It all depends on your genetics. For example, I have thick healthy hair right below my lateral humps. This area is unsafe for a Norwood 7, but completely safe for me. The safe zone of a patient changes and is individual. There’s no universal safe zone.

What Is The Overharvested Donor Area In Hair Transplant?

I hope the image clears up what I'm referring to. My family has a history of Norwood 7 so with time, hair transplanted from the upper back of my head will likely become thin due to sensitivity to DHT.

I'm wondering if it's okay to transplant hair just above the donor area in the above diagram if I'm going to use DHT blockers like fin or dut.

If you have a family history of Norwood 7, it's best not to get hair from the areas prone to hair loss for a Norwood 7. As I said, those areas may still thin over time, even if you're on medication. Medications tend to work the least on Norwood 7s. Have you gotten an examination in person? Are you a Norwood 7 pattern?

Yeah, I was examined by a clinic in the UK. They advised that since I had hairloss this extensive at my age, it's likely it would not stabilise until reaching a Norwood 7 pattern.

I was turned away by them and recommended SMP instead.

I'm hopefully looking to do a transplant with Dr Soni (prefer FUT) soon but still likely won't be able to get full coverage.

you should get fut procedure and then it will get extracted from the safe zone

+ fue for beard

Yes this is what I'm planning. It will take multiple procedures but the doctor has a lot of success stories with high norwoods.

What really pushed me to look into Dr Soni was he's done procedures with people from East Africa (where I'm from) which is very encouraging.

I'm still not sure of doing anything more than FUT as I'd rather go to a specialist for Afro FUE procedures.

Just because you’re balding young doesn’t mean you’ll be a Norwood 7. Did they examine your hair microscopically to check for miniaturization?

Dr. Mwamba is performing hair transplants in Kinshasa, you should consult with him as well.

this alone may make you an unsatisfactory candidate for a hair transplant. The first thing you should do is have a thorough in-person consult with a legitimate HT doctor, before going down the rabbit hole and potentially wasting so much time and energy on something that may not even be a good move on your end.
